Standalone ECU Conversions
SR Stand Alone Engine Management Conversions –
With early pre 03 vehicles not having the capability to be mapped meaning that modifications are not utilised at all or to the full benefit of the engine and due to age an increasing number of failures are occurring with ECU boards breaking down and causing very odd faults, the solution to these issues are a standalone ECU conversion which can give you more control over how your engine runs.
Think of an ECU conversion like comparing a 2000 phone to a modern smart phone in its capability and processing power, giving you far more options and your cars brain a technological jump forward.
Standalone ECU’s can give you the choice to run any sensors and actuators that you like such as boost control, injectors and coils etc. You can then create and program a custom fuel and ignition map for your engine.
Due to increased sensor range and mapping capability you will see lots of benefits even when running a standard engine without modifications, these will help with the following –
Conversion packages are vehicle and VIN specific with custom wiring looms or “piggy back” looms depending upon model etc, full engine looms can be tailored to you with knock sensors, EGT sensors, extra analog and digital support, drive by wire support and Extra high/low GPO outputs.
*Please be aware that all standalone management systems will need full vehicle mapping completed on a dyno in order to run and drive. (Some models can be supplied with a base map in order to start and run the car however should not be driven far on this map)
**Please contact us if additional sensors, upgraded ECU models or upgraded specification wiring is required and we can provide suggestions and quotes for these options.
The heart of the base system is the Maxx ECU Street and consists of the following hardware:
The Maxx ECU Street runs the engine in either Alpha-N (Throttle Load Based), or Speed Density (MAP Sensor Based).
Internal logging up to 1000hz (Channels user selectable)
Sequential Fuel Injection & Ignition using OEM sensors
Class leading on board Wideband (LSU 4.2)
CAN-BUS user definable
Base wiring looms are supplied with all engine connectors terminated and rubber booted where applicable, and are built using automotive grade PVC thin wall cable.
The wiring loom is braided using Vidaflex® Monofil PE. This product offers very good mechanical strength and also provides excellent resistance to salt water, oil, fuels and solvents.
Looms are self-extinguishing and operates at temperatures within the range of – 70°C to +150°C.
The junctions are being sealed with adhesive heat shrink tubing which helps secure and insulate the connections, and rubber boots are applied over connectors to protect them from moisture, dirt, or physical damage.
We provide a single bulkhead grommet (51mm hole required) pre-fitted to each loom. The grommet can taper either direction to your request.
Internally, the opposite side of the bulkhead grommet, we can make this at a custom length for you.
Next to the ECU is a 12-way GT150 connector, and also a 6-Way Deusch DT connector 9. (These are to connect the engine harness to the vehicle).
A wiring diagram is provided, along with a mating connector, and 2m flying cables on these. These are to connect things like tachometers, low side relays for fans & fuel pumps as required0.
We also pre-terminate into the loom, coolant temp sensor, oil pressure switch, and alternator exciter wiring. These all terminate to these connectors. This allows a clean installation, without needing to add in wiring for the OEM gauges.
In our standard package, we include 6 x VAG coil packs, and 6 x Bosch Fuel injectors. We have chosen to include these items in the kits as standard due to so many of the older Jaguar coils & injectors being old and worn, causing various problems.
It makes sense when installing our modern system to upgrade the injectors and ignition coils.
We provide a start and run base map for the 3.2 NA, 4.0 NA, and the 4.0 SC
Our base price for the above, including 6x coils, 6x injectors, ECU, engine harness, and base map is:
£2499+VAT
Below are options to the above:
The Maxx ECU Race is a significant upgrade over the Maxx ECU Street:
Drive By Wire Support
2 x Knock Sensor & Knock control Support
8 x EGT Sensor Support
Extra Analogue & Digital Inputs
Extra High and Low GPO Outputs
When you select this upgrade we add the knock sensor wiring into the main harness and will terminate these into the correct places.
Additional wiring is added where required and determined at the point of ordering, (For instance where drive by wire throttle body wiring is added etc).
+£649+VAT
This upgrade is for someone after the best available, or a race environment.
The entire loom is built from military grade “Spec44” cable, This is then sheathed with “DR-25” and the main trunk of the loom is concentric twisted.
There are service loops the Molex CMC connector/s, Raychem insulation boots are used on all transitions and rubber boots on connectors.
This option includes all connectors labelled with professional printed yellow heat shrink, and covered with adhesive clear heat shrink.

*Each of our looms is built to order, allowing us to seamlessly incorporate customised features to meet your unique needs and preferences.
For example if you would like to add oil pressure/ temperature sensors then please feel free to E-Mail us and ask specific details.
**The AJ6 engine can be run on this system, however different length ignition coils are required and also the front crank pickup needs to be swapped for the AJ16 version along with the cam sensor arrangement.
***Manual Gearbox use only.
The only Automatic gearbox we actively support ourselves is the ZF8HP.
You can add the wiring directly into the harness if needed. A custom flash for the gearbox is required, and we will provide this.
ZF8HP adaptor plates and flywheels are currently in development.
Please email us to discuss your specific requirements so we can tailor make your loom for your application.
This is our race winning, widely used Jaguar AJV8 Loom & ECU Setup.
This setup will truely allow starting and running the AJV8 literally in anything. A car, a boat, anything.
We started running the V8’s on the MaxxECU Race back in 2018 with our partners PVE. We’ve developed pretty much every different type of AJV8 possible, Supercharged or Normally aspirated. This specific kit, will fit the 4.2, or the 4.4. It does not cover the 4.0, due to the different ignition coils. This fits the later type. We will have a 4.0 option available Q2 2025
All of the connectors are genuine connectors, and crimped using professional grade crimping tools. You can run this engine using the S-Type Diesel gearbox using the Swallows Racing flywheel and clutch setup. Or, indeed you can run the ZF8HP. The Jaguar ZF 8-Speed Automatic gearbox. We’ve worked tirelessly to make this as seamless as it can be. We currently have the adaptor flexplate in the webshop, this will bolt up to the AJV8, and allow you to mount the 8HP Torque converter. The 8HP required is the 8HP70 from a 3.0D Jaguar XF circa 2015. These are widely available at a reasonable cost. We recommend Auto Reserve.
This loom comes with instructions on the cable routings around the engine. We have made the decision to not use the OEM throttle body. These can be troublesome even on the OEM cars. The Jaguar throttle body is expensive, and becoming more and more of a pain to get hold of. We decided upon the Bosch series of throttle bodies. It’s wired to plug into the 68mm Bosch throttle body.
Between Swallows Racing, and ourselves, we truly believe we’re offering the best available option to get one of these engines running perfectly, using the OEM sensors. Running fully sequentially, and indeed fly by wire, with knock control. As it came from the factory. We’re aware you can get lesser systems to run these engines. Mostly by treating them as a 4-cylinder, and doubling up injectors and coils. This was the ‘thing to do’ 20 years ago. We like to think we’ve moved on a little since then!
There are connectors for spare inputs and outputs near both the ECU, and on the engine. The one near the ECU has CAN connections, connections for the internal throttle pedal (Your choice of pedal), and a pair of digital inputs. These can be used for paddle shifters, or launch control etc. There is a 12-Way DT connector on the engine, ready for extra sensors. Oil pressure, temperature and so on.
This loom is constructed from Thinwall Automotive cable. It’s covered with heatshrink. The junctions are ATUM adhesive heat shrink. We supply two new connectors for the Coolant Temperature sensor, and the Air Temperature Sensor. All connectors, are labelled on yellow professionally printed heatshrink. This is covered in adhesive clear heatshrink.
The engine can run with throttle bodies, or the standard intake manifold for normally aspirated, or the Supercharged version. We will be able to log in and get the vehicle running for you online. We are able to provide base maps for most types of engine. We’ve tuned most varieties of these engines from a completely stock 4.2, to a wild Supercharged 750bhp race car. We have pushed these engines to the limits. We are widely considered the most prolific AJV8 tuners.
