XJS Dampers and Coilover Kits

We have covered damper and coilover upgrades in the past but now we are specially taking a look at the packages we have created for the XJS.

The XJS was the longest running production car that Jaguar built, spanning twenty-one years, until it was replaced by the XK8 in 1996. There has never been a Jaguar with more model variants than the XJS. The grand old GT can now be truly considered as a classic with early Pre-HE models approaching fifty years old. It’s very noticeable when you drive an XJS what state the suspension is in, there are many tell-tale signs and within driving these cars a few hundred metres it is often easy to guess what needs replacing even before getting the car on the ramp and inspecting it. 

As so often with technical innovation Jaguar were ahead of the curve when they introduced Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) to their cars in 1961on both the E Type and Mark X. Live rear axles were far more common in this period. Jaguar used variants of this IRS system right up to 1996 including on the XJS. Springing and damping are provided by four spring and damper units which attach to the crossbeam at the top and the lower links at the bottom. The use of two spring and damper units on each side is unusual and allows the use of smaller springs, taking up less space and protruding less into the luggage area. It also equalises the load transmitted to the front and rear of the crossbeam, but does mean the XJS has six dampers in total. 

From a racing perspective our experience on the XJS goes back more than ten years and we are currently running a Class C car in our racing fleet. With this experience plus our family knowledge of these cars which goes back forty years when XJS was still in production, we have with our partners at AVO Technics created suspension replacements and upgrades which offer customers a few options. Whether you want to bring back that majestic OEM ride, improve the stance or want something a little more hardcore so you can fully enjoy the performance of your XJS there is an AVO/SR solution for you. After extensive hours running chassis dynamics and testing on and off the racetrack, we believe we have the perfect solution to the overly soft and ageing suspension systems commonly found on the XJS, making the vehicle ride as it should have been when the cars were new.

Our development of the AVO/SR coilovers has led us to create the perfect road car kit which is also below the cost of the original manufacture replacements. Saving on maintenance costs but giving a huge performance benefit.

We aim to have catered for all enthusiasts with the ability to run the car at standard ride height or up to 25mm lower, as well as the option to have very soft bump and rebound similar to OEM or stiffer for track days at the simple turn of the adjusters on each coilover body. Our AVO/SR damper bodies are hard coat anodised so there is no worry about flaking powder coat and the best bit is that our dampers can be rebuilt by AVO at any time when needed in the future, so no throwing away and needing new as with the OEM units. The AVO/SR coilovers is a modification and upgrade that we believe can transform your XJS into the car it should have been, bringing the suspension technology up to date for the modern world.

As we said these coilovers uniquely come in three different options depending upon the requirement, with options for smaller internal diameter AVO rear springs and slightly stiffer lowering springs at the front, dampers with brand new standard Jaguar springs all around and finally the ability to purchase to the dampers on their own to fit the standard springs you currently have on the car to them. (The last option would only be recommended if you have recently replaced the springs on your car or would like to choose your own springs).
